Navy ship could be given Freedom of Cambridge

Cambridge is looking to give a Royal Navy ship the Freedom of the City.

Cambridge City Council is planning to grant the honour to the HMS Protector, which it said is the Royal Navy’s only ice patrol ship.

Councillors recognised residents may be "bemused" by the plans, but highlighted the ship’s links to organisations in the city, including the Scott-Polar Institute and the British Antarctic Survey.

An Honorary Freedom of the City is designed to be granted to "persons of distinction and persons who have, in the opinion of the council, rendered eminent services to the city".
