Sanctuary is an exhibition in Cambridge organised by the ArtCan East Anglia
group. Members of ArtCan East Anglia won a bursary to bring art by women from around East Anglia to the Leper Chapel. The Leper Chapel is a magnificent 12th century Romanesque building and is one of the oldest complete surviving buildings in Cambridge. The chapel, which is not usually open to the public provides the backdrop for the work of 12 women artists who worked together to create a show that incorporates painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media and drawing. Not following a specific theme for this exhibition, the artists aim is to showcase their work so that it resonates with the wonderful space engaging in an uplifting way with their audience.
The exhibition runs from 25 - 28 May, 11 – 4pm at the Leper Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene, Barnwell Junction on the Newmarket Road in Cambridge, CB5 8JJ. An event takes place on Saturday 27 May 2023, 17:00-20:00.
Free Entry.
Step access to venue.
Participating artists:
Liliana Dobbs, Jane Hindmarch, Sarah Milne, Sarah Pooley, Emma Copley, Rebecca Moss Guyver, Wendy, Brooke-Smith, Jill Desborough, Juli Fejer, Deborah Pendell, Amy Wormald, Karen Turner.
ArtCan East Anglia would like to thank the Hollybush Prize and the Women in Art Prize for their
ongoing support for women artists, who are still under-represented in the art world.
About ArtCan: ArtCan is an artist-led, non-profit arts organisation with members across Britain and internationally. ArtCan’s work is supported by the efforts of artist-member volunteers and contributions from donations and Friends of ArtCan. ArtCan works with galleries, but also seeks new spaces where art becomes a part of everyday life and with the aim of involving audiences in an organic and personal way. ArtCan’s artist-centred ethos means that the model does not involve charging membership fees or commissions on sales, to help artists focus on developing a sustainable practice.
