Conservatives Lose Cambridgeshire County Council Control

The authority now has no party holding a majority.

The Tories - who had been in power since 2017 - do remain the biggest party having won 28 of the 61 available seats.

The Liberal Democrats saw sizeable gains, winning 20 seats, including a number from the Conservatives, in Ely North, Ely South, Cottenham and Willingham, Bar Hill, Hardwick, as well as Longstanton, Northstowe, and Over.

There was a surprising result to the south of Cambridge with the Liberal Democrats' winning two seats in Sawston and Shelford from the Conservatives.

The results of Peterborough City Council, under no overall control, and Labour-held Cambridge City Council are anticipated later on Friday.
In the county council election, Labour did not field candidates in six south Cambridgeshire seats, five of which had been won by the Conservatives in 2017.

The Liberal Democrats won all of those seats when the results were announced on Friday afternoon.

The police and crime commissioner and mayoral results, positions currently held by Conservatives, are set to be revealed on Saturday.

At the local elections in 2019, the Tories lost power in Peterborough, and 23 of the council's 61 seats were being contested on Thursday.

Cambridgeshire County Council will agree key political roles – such as Leader of the Council and all key  committee appointments - at its Annual General Meeting which will be held on Tuesday, 18th May at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford.
