Tributes Paid To Cambs Cricket Stalwart

Phil Gillett died during the final Eastern Counties Over 60s cup on Tuesday at Fitzwilliam College Sports Ground, Cambridge

Mr Gillett was playing for Cambs/Hunts, preparing to open the bowling for his team in the match against Essex.

Earlier, he had complained to skipper Nick Andrews of not feeling well during the lunch break and then declared himself fit.

Phil was treated immediately by Peterborough GP Dr Sajid Shirazi, who had only just turned up to support the side, and then by a team of paramedics before being taken to Addenbrookes Hospital where he later died..

He was vice-chairman of Waresley CC, where he played his club cricket.  Andrew Donald, Club Chairman, celebrated Phil's contribution to the game.  "Phil was well known throughout the cricket community having played for Waresley and Huntingdonshire for more than 40 years.  Cricket was his passion, and his competitive nature brought many match winning performances for both Club and County. He will be sorely missed by everyone at Waresley CC. Our thoughts and sympathy are with Tracy, John, Ryan, Dale his grandchildren and all the family."

Also paying tribute, Nick Andrews said "To say he will be missed is an understatement. Phil will leave a massive hole in a side he had only recently joined and will be deeply missed by all his cricket mates in the Over 60s."

Mr Gillett played over 50 matches for Hunts Over 50s before moving up to the under 60s last season,.
