Avoid Cambridge's Mill Road Bridge - Or Face A Fine

Drivers are warned to avoid Mill Road bridge or face a fine, as enforcement cameras come into effect on on new bus gate restrictions.

The bridge is now closed to cars, vans and lorries in both directions but remains open for people travelling by bus, bike and on foot. Vehicles (including those making deliveries) can still get to all shops and homes along the Mill Road although drivers may need to take a different route to avoid the bridge.

Notices to remind motorists are being displayed on traffic screens on routes into the city. Drivers who ignore warnings and continue through the bus gate will be fined £60 (reducing to £30, if paid within two weeks). All funds are reinvested in road maintenance.

The layout of Mill Road has been changed as part of a series of schemes being put in across the Cambridgeshire under the Active Travel programme, to encourage cycling and walking and support social distancing measures during the current public health emergency.

Money for this project and others to encourage cycling and walking has come directly from central government’s ‘emergency active travel fund’.

Schemes including new cycle routes and more space for pedestrians are in progress for places across Cambridgeshire and are due to be in place by mid-August. More complex projects like cycle routes across Ely town centre are anticipated for later in the year or spring 2021, once funds are confirmed for a second tranche of schemes.
