Burglar Walked Into Home, Stole Car

A man who walked into a Cambridge home and stole bank cards and a car has been jailed.

Carrying an open wine bottle, Jason Turner walked up the drive of a property in Scholars Walk at about 4.45am on 25 May and attempted to open an outbuilding door before trying the handle of the front door.

The 33-year-old opened and closed the door and walked back down the driveway before returning a minute later. This time he entered the home and left three minutes later with a backpack.

Turner then left the driveway again for another four minutes before returning a final time where he got in the victim’s vehicle and drove off.

The victims called police just after 7am and told officers there were Apple air tags attached to the car keys and in the bag and the live location of them. Bank cards had also been taken during the burglary which had been used at the BP garage on Elizabeth Way.

The tags had been discarded in Scotland Road but with the help of CCTV in the area, from the property and the garage, officers were able to identify Turner and by 9am the vehicle had been recovered in Fen Road and Turner arrested.

At Peterborough Crown Court yesterday (16 November) Turner, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to two years and four months (876 days) in prison after pleading guilty to burglary, theft, theft of a motor vehicle and fraud by false representation.

Detective Sergeant Ashley Ryan from the Southern Acquisitive Crime team said: “Turner’s offending is relentless across Cambridgeshire. Thankfully with the help of the live tracking, CCTV and our own knowledge of Turner, we were able to ensure he was arrested at the earliest opportunity.”
