Cambridge man prosecuted for abandoning burnt out vehicle

A Cambridge man has been successfully prosecuted by Cambridge City Council for abandoning his vehicle.

Duane Butcher, of Molewood Close, was ordered to pay a fine of £660 by Cambridge Magistrates, on Thursday 10 May, after he failed to claim his Renault Megane, which had been left parked on Molewood Close in a damaged and burnt out condition.

The vehicle had been reported to the council as abandoned and a hazard to the local community.

Mr Butcher was issued a fixed penalty notice as an alternative to prosecution. When he failed to pay the fine, the matter was referred to the court and he was prosecuted for the original offence.

Mr Butcher did not enter a plea and that case was heard in his absence. As a result of this successful prosecution, Mr Butcher was ordered to pay a fine of £660, as well as £407 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Cllr Anna Smith, Executive Councillor for Streets and Open Spaces, said: “Abandoned vehicles are an eyesore that can generate significant economic, environmental and social costs. They encourage other forms of anti-social behaviour and have a negative impact on the local community and area.

“Burnt out vehicles are not just an eyesore, they represent a substantial risk to health. When a vehicle burns, it releases small quantities of hydrofluoric acid which is corrosive.

“I hope this prosecution sends a clear message – make sure you dispose of your unwanted vehicle legally and responsibly.”
