Celebrations As 128 New Parking Spaces In Ely Given The Go-Ahead

There will be even more parking spaces available in Ely it has been announced, after the East Cambridgeshire District Council planning committee gave the go ahead for 128 spaces to be created near the Railway station.

The site, which is approximately 1 acre and located on waste ground near the old Bowling Alley on The Dock, Ely, will be turned into further car parking spaces and a new footpath, after planning committee unanimously approved the proposals at their meeting on 1st February.

Cllr Bill Hunt, Chair of the ECDC Asset Development committee commented: “More and more houses are being built in the local area, businesses are expanding and investing in Ely, and use of the railway station is increasing, so these car parking spaces are essential.

“Furthermore, the opening of the new Railway Station at the Cambridge Science Park means travelling to work by train for people in our District has become much more viable.

“This initiative will very positively impact on the lives of commuters; not only because they will have a better chance of getting a space, but also because this car park will be significantly cheaper than the Station car park.

“We are thrilled that this development has been given unanimous approval and we are looking forward to getting started and delivering this much needed facility for local people as soon as we can.”

The proposal involves a raised pedestrian walkway with traffic calming ramps on either side, linking to the existing pathway and so providing an additional route for pedestrians to walk from Angel Drove car park to the Station.

The car park is expected to be open in the autumn.
