Get active and have fun in the sports zone on Saturday at the Big Weekend

On the same weekend as the World Cup Final and the Wimbledon finals, Cambridge City Council is hosting a free sports zone area as part of the Big Weekend event.

From 12 noon-5pm on Saturday 14 July, visitors to the Big Weekend will be able to join more than 30 local sports and fitness organisations who will be leading demonstration and taster sessions throughout the day.

Sports and activities will be suitable for all ages and abilities, and will include martial arts, fencing, combat exercise classes, football, tag rugby, tennis, table tennis, trampolining, cheerleading and cycling, as well as a challenging orienteering ‘micro maze’ to try.

In the dedicated fitness marquee, free half hour back-to-back classes will be on offer in Bounce (workouts involving mini trampolines), Zumba, pilates, Glow Fit and hot pod yoga.

Lots of other activities will be available to try, and there is no need to book – people can just come along and join in.

Information will also be available on where people can take part in sports and fitness activities in and around Cambridge.

Cllr Richard Johnson, Executive Councillor for Communities, said: “The sports zone at this year’s Big Weekend gives visitors the chance to try new and exciting activities, which they may then want to investigate further or join in with.

“The event will showcase some of the many sports and fitness groups in the area who can give residents the chance to become more active.

“Sports and activities are a great way for people to improve not just their physical, but their mental well-being – that is why we are committed to helping people become more active in a fun, friendly environment.”
