Cambridge MP Criticises Water Firm After Chemicals Discovered In Supplies

Investigation shows water with 'four times legal limit' of toxic chemicals found in some supplies.

The discovery of water with higher than allowed limits of PFOS in supplies to more than a thousand customers in Stapleford and Great Shelford has been reported by The Guardian newspaper which says affected customers were never informed.

PFOS is a man-made chemical linked with increased cholesterol, low birthweight and suppressed immune response,

Cambridge Water has admitted it removed a supply containing four times the legal limit of perfluorooctane sulphonate (PFOS) from the homes of customers in south Cambridgeshire in June 2021.

Daniel Zeichner, Member of Parliament for Cambridge, has criticised the company, saying, “It is totally unacceptable that Cambridge Water have supplied more than 1,000 people in our county with water containing dangerously high levels of toxic chemicals.

"What is even more shocking is that the company chose not to inform those households that they had been exposed. This case illustrates how some private water companies are failing to fulfil their duty to provide clean and safe drinking water”.
